Mohamed Abotaka charged with murder in Plymouth

Published 24 October 2026

Devon and Cornwall Police have charged Mohamed Abotaka, 36, with murdering Ali Barzai, 52, whose body was found partly inside a wheelie bin in Plymouth. The charge is an allegation, and the police reports do not establish guilt. Abotaka remained in custody as of October 24, with an appearance scheduled at Plymouth Magistrates Court for Monday, October 26. Police said Barzai was found at about 6:40 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, in a service lane off Grand Parade in the Plymouth Hoe area. Paramedics treated him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the force. Police said Abotaka, of Grand Parade, is believed to be from Syria. They described Barzai as believed to be of North African heritage and said efforts to locate his next of kin were continuing. Detective Inspector Chris Lithgow urged people not to speculate about the case, particularly on social media, saying speculation could risk prejudicing ongoing proceedings. Police said a heightened presence would remain in the area in the coming days and acknowledged concern in the local community. The force asked anyone with relevant information, images or footage to contact police. Information can be submitted...
