MLB Proposes Offseason Restructuring in CBA Talks

Published 28 August 2026

Major League Baseball has proposed a significant restructuring of its offseason calendar, including a compressed free-agent signing window and a trade moratorium, as part of its latest collective bargaining agreement offer to the players association. The proposal, made on Thursday, August 27, is explicitly contingent on the union's acceptance of a salary cap system, a condition the MLB Players Association immediately rejected. Under the plan, teams would be prohibited from finalizing free-agent contracts with players other than their own until the start of the Winter Meetings, typically held in early December.
