Minneapolis apartment shooting kills 2, suspect; 3 officers injured

A shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, left two residents dead, the suspected gunman dead, and three police officers injured, authorities said. The incident began during a child custody exchange outside the Shoreline Plaza apartment complex and escalated into a rampage that ended with police fatally shooting the suspect on the ninth floor. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension identified the deceased victims as Dale Henry Spry, 63, and Muse A. Afrah, 61. Both were residents of the building. The suspected gunman was identified as Carlton Neal Johnson II, 35, who also lived in the complex. A preliminary autopsy indicated Johnson died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide. According to investigators, the violence started at approximately 4:36 p.m. when Johnson shot a woman, believed to be the mother of his child, outside the building during an arranged custody handoff. The child was not injured. Johnson then entered the building, shot two employees on the first floor, and took an elevator to the ninth floor, where he fatally shot Spry and Afrah.
