Milei renews Argentina’s Falklands claim at the UN

Argentine President Javier Milei renewed Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, in a September 23 address to the United Nations General Assembly, urging Britain to resume negotiations and criticizing the UN for not enforcing resolutions on the dispute. At the same time, Argentina is pursuing sanctions proceedings linked to offshore oil exploration near the islands and has introduced a bill that would increase penalties for unauthorized resource activity. Milei described the islands as a national cause and called for a peaceful resolution. He accused the United Nations of failing to enforce resolutions that urge both sides to avoid unilateral changes while the sovereignty dispute remains unresolved. He said Argentina would not wait for the UN and international community to fulfill their mandate. The address followed Argentina’s move earlier this month to begin sanctions proceedings against more than 60 companies and people linked to an offshore drilling project, according to reporting on the proceedings. British officials have called Argentina’s actions unacceptable and said the islands have the right to develop their natural resources.
