Mike P. Nelson to Direct New Saw Film

Lionsgate and Blumhouse/Atomic Monster have named Mike P. Nelson director of a new, untitled Saw film, with James Wan, Leigh Whannell and Jason Blum among its producers. Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock wrote the screenplay, according to the project announcement. No release date or cast has been announced. The announcement moves the franchise toward a new film after an earlier plan for Saw XI stalled. Nelson is known for directing Wrong Turn and Silent Night, Deadly Night. Wan directed the 2004 original Saw and co-created the series with Whannell; their return as producers brings both creators back to the project in a production role. Nelson said the screenplay brings back the mystery of the original while introducing new ideas. Wan said he wanted a director who would honor the world of Saw and described Nelson’s approach as distinctive.
