Microsoft Says X Account Was Used to Promote Clippy Token

Published 2 October 2026

Microsoft said unauthorized users gained access to its official X account and used it to promote a cryptocurrency token themed around Clippy, the company’s former Office assistant. The account, which has more than 13 million followers, reposted content from an account impersonating Clippy and changed its profile image to feature the character. Microsoft said it had secured the account, removed unauthorized posts and was investigating how the access occurred. The activity took place on Thursday, October 1, according to the reporting. The account behind the reposted content, identified as clippymsftcto, was later suspended. A separate account continued promoting a Clippy-themed token and claimed its liquidity pool was paired with MSFT, Microsoft’s stock ticker. The claim was made by the account promoting the token; the reporting does not establish any connection between Microsoft and the token. A post that appeared on Microsoft’s account later disclaimed company support for any cryptocurrency or related token and said the Clippy branding was unauthorized. Reports said the post was subsequently deleted.
