Micron Announces $10 Billion U.S. Research Lab for Future Memory Tech

Micron Technology announced on August 20, 2026, the establishment of the Micron Research Labs, a new U.S.-based innovation center in Boise, Idaho, backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade. The facility will focus on long-term, pre-competitive research in memory and semiconductor technologies expected to be critical more than 10 years from now. The research center will be headquartered on Micron's existing Boise campus, with groundbreaking anticipated in calendar year 2027. The lab is designed to accommodate hundreds of research scientists and aims to explore future memory technologies, advanced memory and computing architectures, advanced packaging, and next-generation semiconductor manufacturing methods. According to Micron, the work will go beyond the company's existing product roadmaps to investigate foundational technologies. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra framed the initiative within the context of maintaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence. "Today's strategic choices will define who dominates the AI economy ahead, and America's AI future depends on domestically produced memory," Mehrotra stated.
