Mexican authorities raid hidden crypto mine in Puebla mountains

Mexican authorities raided a clandestine cryptocurrency mining operation in the remote mountains of Puebla, seizing approximately 300 graphics processing units and other industrial equipment while investigating potential electricity theft and money laundering. The operation, located in the municipality of Tlaola, was discovered between September 8 and 12, according to a statement from the Puebla state government. Federal prosecutors, the Mexican Navy, and state security officers secured the property, finding not only the GPUs but also a transformer, roughly 80 medium-voltage terminals, and eight satellite internet antennas. Investigators are examining whether the facility illegally drew power from the nearby Nuevo Necaxa hydroelectric dam. This marks the fourth comparable clandestine crypto mining site discovered in the region since early 2025. "Drug cartels appear to have reached a new level of sophistication," security analyst David Saucedo told Reuters, citing the technical expertise and financing required to establish and operate such a site.
