Metaplanet Transfers 1,000 Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime

Published 25 August 2026

Metaplanet, a Japan-listed company with one of Asia's largest corporate Bitcoin treasuries, transferred 1,000 Bitcoin worth approximately $79.77 million to Coinbase Prime on August 25, according to blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain. The transaction has sparked speculation about a potential sale, but neither Metaplanet nor Coinbase has confirmed that the transfer involved a liquidation of the assets. Lookonchain classified the movement as a deposit to Coinbase Prime, a platform that provides institutional-grade trading, financing, and custody services. A deposit to such a platform can precede a sale, but it can also support custody management, collateral arrangements, or internal account transfers. The wallet label reflects Lookonchain's analysis and does not confirm that Coinbase received instructions to sell the Bitcoin. Further evidence, such as a treasury update or transactions showing the assets were sold, would be needed to establish a disposal. This is not the first time Metaplanet has faced similar scrutiny. On August 12, CEO Simon Gerovich addressed activity after analysts observed 3,881 BTC leaving wallets linked to the company.
