Meta Settles for $17.1 Billion Over Child Safety

Meta has agreed to pay up to $17.1 billion and implement sweeping safety changes to its Facebook and Instagram platforms to settle claims from 47 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and several territories that the social media giant designed its products to addict children and misled users about their safety. The proposed settlement, announced on August 26, 2026, requires approval from a federal judge and would resolve a major trial in Northern California that began on August 18, 2026. Under the terms of the agreement, Meta will pay at least $12.1 billion over a 10-year period to resolve the states' lawsuits. The total payment could rise to $17.
