Met reexamines CCTV in Jill Dando murder inquiry

The Metropolitan Police is reexamining original CCTV footage from Putney Bridge station as part of its ongoing inquiries into the unsolved 1999 murder of BBC presenter Jill Dando. The force says advances in image-enhancement technology have made a new review of the footage possible, but has cautioned that it should not be taken as a newly opened investigation or a significant line of inquiry. The recording includes images of an unidentified man, known as Man X, seen near the station around 20 minutes after Dando was shot outside her home in Fulham on April 26, 1999. The footage has drawn renewed attention because the man was reportedly seen along a possible route away from the scene. The Met has not said that the review identifies him or establishes a connection to the killing. A facial-comparison expert’s assessment, reported in connection with an earlier investigation, found similarities between Man X and Milorad Ulemek, a Serbian former paramilitary commander convicted in Serbia of crimes including involvement in political assassinations. That reported resemblance does not establish that Ulemek is the person in the footage or that he was involved in Dando’s murder.
