McLaren Announces £500M Investment for First SUV and UK Expansion

Published 19 September 2026

McLaren has announced a £500 million investment to develop its first SUV and expand its manufacturing operations in the United Kingdom. The investment, from its Abu Dhabi-based shareholder LIMAD, aims to transform the British supercar maker into a broader luxury manufacturer with higher sales and profit margins. The plan includes the construction of a new vehicle assembly plant in the UK, with Sheffield identified as the likely location, though a final decision has not been made. McLaren will also develop and build its own engines and transmissions in-house, a move designed to retain more value per vehicle. The company stated the investment is expected to create at least 1,000 new jobs across its UK sites by 2032, with its manufacturing workforce set to double. The upcoming SUV will be a four-door, five-seat performance model, marking a significant departure for the brand known for its two-seat supercars. It is in advanced planning for a launch before 2030. McLaren CEO Nick Collins said the vehicle would bring something unique to the segment, targeting wealthy fans of its Formula One team who do not currently own its sports cars.
