McCullum recruits Pietersen as England whiteball mentor

Published 14 September 2026

England whiteball coach Brendon McCullum has appointed former captain Kevin Pietersen as a specialist mentor for the men's whiteball teams, a role designed to challenge the coaching staff and energize the squad ahead of the 2027 Cricket World Cup. The appointment, confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board, is for 12 months and marks Pietersen's first formal involvement with the senior England setup since his international playing career ended in 2014. McCullum revealed he was the driving force behind the recruitment, personally approaching Pietersen despite the former player's history of public criticism of the team. "I rang Kev Pietersen and said, do you want to come and help us challenge for a World Cup? He said, I was just criticising you a lot, not long ago. I said, I don't care about that," McCullum told reporters. He emphasized that Pietersen's mandate is not to focus on a single skill set but to "look across the environment and challenge me privately around ways we can improve things." Pietersen's appointment has generated excitement within the squad.
