Marvel's Wolverine Sells 1.9M Copies Despite Criticism

Published 19 September 2026

Marvel's Wolverine has achieved strong initial sales, moving 1.9 million copies in its first three days and generating $130 million in revenue, according to estimates from Alinea Analytics. The PlayStation 5 exclusive, developed by Insomniac Games, launched on September 15, 2026, and quickly became one of the top-selling games of the year despite facing criticism for its gameplay and design. The sales figures place Wolverine ahead of other PlayStation Studios titles released in 2026, including MLB The Show 26, which sold 1.5 million copies on PS5, and Marathon, which sold 1.8 million units across all platforms. Physical copies accounted for 22.9% of total sales, a lower percentage compared to previous Insomniac games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2, where physical sales made up 35% of revenue. This aligns with Sony's announced plan to end disc production for new PlayStation games by 2028. Despite the commercial success, the game received a Metacritic score of 77, one of the lowest for a Sony first-party game in years. Critics and players have mocked elements such as the "fart trail" UI hints, quick-time events, and repetitive platforming.
