Manchester derby set for Old Trafford with facial recognition policing

The match, scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff, will see tens of thousands of fans descend on the stadium, prompting a coordinated policing effort across the city and transport network. Greater Manchester Police stated the technology will help officers identify individuals who are wanted by police or subject to relevant court orders, aiming to keep supporters and the wider public safe. The force is working with both clubs, Trafford Council, and Transport for Greater Manchester. Chief Inspector Gareth Firth said the operation is designed to ensure everyone can enjoy the occasion safely and responsibly, with officers deployed at the stadium, in the city centre, and on public transport routes. The force also emphasized its commitment to tackling violence against women and girls, with two additional safeguarding officers to be deployed inside Old Trafford alongside the club's staff.
