Mamata Banerjee's niece found dead at West Bengal home

Brishti Mukherjee, the 28-year-old niece of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was found dead at her home in Birbhum district on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Police said her body was discovered hanging in a room on the second floor of her residence in Kusumba village, under the Rampurhat police station area. According to a senior police officer, the body was recovered in the morning after family members informed authorities. It has been sent to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for a postmortem examination. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of her death, with officials stating that findings will be established after the postmortem and other procedural inquiries. Family members told police that Mukherjee had been suffering from depression for several years and was undergoing treatment. They also noted that she had lost her job following a Supreme Court order that cancelled the recruitment of nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching staff in government-aided schools over alleged corruption in the primary teacher recruitment scam.
