Major sports leagues seek lifetime bans for bettors who harass athletes

The five major North American professional sports leagues and their players associations have jointly called on state gambling regulators to impose mandatory lifetime betting bans on individuals who harass or threaten athletes, citing a documented rise in abuse linked to legal sports betting. In a letter sent Tuesday to regulators in 35 states and Washington, D.C., the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and MLS, along with their respective players unions, requested that states mandate permanent bans for bettors verified to have engaged in threatening or harassing behavior toward players, coaches, officials, or their families. The coalition also asked for the creation of a streamlined, standardized reporting system to allow leagues, teams, and players to document harassment directly to gambling commissions. The letter argued that current measures are insufficient, stating that "threatening the safety of an athlete or their family members over a sports bet crosses a bright ethical and criminal line." The push comes amid growing concerns over athlete safety as legal sports betting has expanded nationwide.
