Maharashtra FDA year-round food safety framework launched

Maharashtra's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has introduced a new year-round framework for monitoring food safety during festivals and large public gatherings, with Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe clarifying that the initiative is designed to prevent adulteration and ensure public health, not to impose restrictions on religious or cultural celebrations. The new system, termed the Festival Enforcement Calendar, establishes a consistent approach to food safety oversight throughout the year, moving away from issuing separate directions for individual festivals. Mundhe stated that the framework does not create new laws or licensing requirements, but rather aims to clarify and consistently apply existing food safety regulations that have been in place since 2011. He emphasized that the FDA is regulating food safety practices, not the festivals themselves. According to Mundhe, the initiative is religion-neutral and festival-neutral, applying to all communities and types of gatherings, including weddings, community meals, and religious events like Eid, Christmas, and New Year's Eve.
