Macron says he and Trump agreed on energy and Ukraine steps

French President Emmanuel Macron said he and US President Donald Trump agreed to work together to ease tensions in global energy markets, protect critical infrastructure in the Middle East and safeguard freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The two leaders met on September 21, 2026 at Trump Tower in New York, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Macron described the discussion as very good and very constructive, saying there was a great deal of openness and that the two leaders were able to go into detail on conflicts he called important for peace in the world and for European security. According to Macron, he and Trump decided to act together to ease tensions in energy markets by protecting critical infrastructure across the Middle East and preserving freedom and safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. On the war in Ukraine, Macron said the two leaders agreed to pool their efforts to secure a moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure and against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.
