LZ Experiment Reports Strongest Dark Matter Signal to Date

An international team of scientists has reported the most compelling indication to date of a direct detection of dark matter, announcing a single particle interaction recorded deep underground in South Dakota that is consistent with the long-sought invisible substance. The finding, presented on September 1 at the 2026 TeV Particle Astrophysics conference in Japan, does not yet meet the statistical threshold for a confirmed discovery but has energized researchers in the decades-long search. The potential signal was detected by the LUXZEPLIN, or LZ, experiment, a collaboration of 250 scientists and engineers from 39 institutions across six countries. The detector, managed by the U.S.
