Luxembourg Airport Halts Flights After Unauthorized Drone Sighting

Luxembourg Airport suspended all flight operations on the evening of September 18, 2026, after unauthorized drones were detected in its airspace, forcing the diversion of 19 flights and affecting more than 1,800 passengers. The airport, the main hub for national carrier Luxair, resumed operations at approximately 1:20 a.m. local time on September 19 after two safety inspections found no immediate risk. The disruption began when unidentified and unauthorized unmanned aircraft systems were visually sighted over the Findel airspace. As a precautionary measure, authorities halted all takeoffs and landings. A total of 19 incoming flights were diverted to airports including Cologne-Bonn, Brussels, Frankfurt-Hahn, Liège, Paris, Basel, and Strasbourg. Seventeen of the diverted services were operated by Luxair, with others from KLM and Air Dolomiti. Prime Minister Luc Frieden stated that Luxembourg had been confronted with the presence of potentially bigger drones in its airspace over the past few days, which led to the precautionary shutdown.
