The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a highly anticipated institution dedicated to visual storytelling, is set to open its doors to the public on September 22, 2026, in Los Angeles. Founded by filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, businesswoman Mellody Hobson, the museum aims to celebrate art that tells stories, challenging traditional art world hierarchies by giving prominence to illustrators, comic artists, and other visual storytellers. The museum's public opening follows a nearly two-decade journey marked by extensive planning, construction delays, and previous attempts to establish the institution in other cities. Lucas has described the endeavor as a personal challenge, stating that the project "almost broke my will" due to its complexity and the opposition encountered. Construction in Los Angeles's Exposition Park began in 2018, with the building's design by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects featuring a striking, sculptural form likened to a spaceship or a cloud. The 300,000-square-foot structure sits within an 11-acre campus designed by landscape architect Mia Lehrer.
