LSR College shifts classes online after assault near campus

Lady Shri Ram College for Women in New Delhi suspended in-person classes from Tuesday afternoon, September 22, 2026, and moved Wednesday, September 23 sessions online after an alleged gangrape near campus and a police encounter roughly 50 metres from its back gate left students anxious about their safety. The alleged assault occurred on Monday evening, September 21, at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir. According to police, a 17-year-old girl visited the temple with a male friend before entering the park, where three men allegedly approached them posing as policemen and separated the two. Police said the girl was taken to a secluded area and sexually assaulted, and that both she and her friend were threatened. All three accused have been arrested, police said. One suspect, identified as Asif, allegedly opened fire when officers intercepted him near D M Office Road in Amar Colony, close to the college's back gate. Police said a bullet struck a head constable's bulletproof jacket and that officers fired in self-defence, injuring Asif in the leg. The other two accused were identified by police sources as Hemant, a lawyer, and his brother Mukesh, a final-year BSc student.
