London Goalkeeper Selected as Tooro King

A non-league goalkeeper from South London has been selected to become the next king of the Tooro people in Uganda, a traditional kingdom with an estimated population of 800,000. George Desmond Kamurasi, 36, captain of SE Dons, was chosen by the Tooro Royal Succession Committee to succeed his late cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. King Oyo passed away on August 27, 2026, in the United States while receiving treatment for cancer. He had ascended to the throne in 1995 at the age of three, becoming the world's youngest reigning monarch. Following his death, a committee of 21 members deliberated and selected Kamurasi as his successor on Friday, September 4, 2026. Kamurasi, known by his nickname "Big G," plays in the ninth tier of English football and also appeared on the television show Soccer AM. The selection presents Kamurasi with a significant decision between his life and football career in London and his royal responsibilities in Uganda. Reports indicate he is reluctant to leave the United Kingdom, where he lives with his wife and son, and has yet to comment publicly on his potential elevation.
