Liverpool Sporting Director Richard Hughes Departs

Liverpool Football Club has confirmed the departure of sporting director Richard Hughes, who is reportedly set to take up a new role with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. The club announced Hughes' exit on Saturday, September 5, 2026, following speculation about his future. Hughes informed the club's ownership earlier this year of his desire to seek a fresh challenge. He joined Liverpool from AFC Bournemouth in June 2024. During his tenure, the club secured its 20th league title in the 2024-25 season and achieved Champions League qualification the following season. Hughes was involved in significant player recruitment, including the acquisition of Bradley Barcola, and played a role in the appointments of head coaches Arne Slot and later Andoni Iraola. Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon, speaking on behalf of the ownership, thanked Hughes for his contributions. "Richard joined us at the start of a period of change, embracing that responsibility by leading our football operations department and overseeing recruitment while also providing valuable support to our coaching staff," Gordon stated.
