Liverpool host Tottenham in Carabao Cup with Robertson returning

Published 15 September 2026

Liverpool host Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Tuesday evening in the Carabao Cup third round, with both teams seeking a victory after recent Premier League draws. The match marks the first return of former Liverpool defender Andy Robertson to Anfield since his summer departure to Tottenham. Robertson, who won eight major trophies during a nine-year spell with Liverpool, has started three of Tottenham's four league matches this season. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola confirmed that goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will start in place of Alisson Becker. Defender Joe Gomez is available for selection but his minutes will be managed as he returns from a preseason injury. Long-term absentees Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni remain sidelined, with Leoni closer to a return than Bradley. In a separate development, former Liverpool midfielder James Milner has returned to the club in an informal coaching capacity. The 40-year-old, who ended his playing career at Brighton this summer, is working with the Academy at Kirkby to gain experience towards his Pro Licence.
