Libya Rivals Sign UN-Backed Deal for Elections Within 24 Months

Published 1 September 2026

Libya's rival political and military factions have signed a UN-backed roadmap committing to hold presidential and parliamentary elections within 24 months, marking the latest attempt to resolve a political deadlock that has plagued the North African nation for over a decade. The agreement was signed on Sunday at the headquarters of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in Tripoli, following months of negotiations. The deal was finalized by representatives from four key institutions: the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU), the High Council of State, the eastern-based House of Representatives, and the Libyan National Army.
