Lena Dunham Welcomes First Child via Surrogate

Lena Dunham and her husband, Luis Felber, have welcomed their first child, a daughter, via surrogate. The 40-year-old creator of the HBO series Girls announced the birth in an essay published in Vogue on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. Dunham described the moment she first saw her daughter, who arrived 13 days later than expected. In her essay, Dunham recounted sitting on a hospital bed and meeting the surrogate she had not known for long. She wrote that she was focused on the surrogate's concentration and strength until she heard the baby's cry. "I saw her face, gasping just as she did," Dunham wrote. "Her eyes, wide and unfocused, taking in the light and shadow, blinking rapidly." She then shared her first words to the newborn: "Hello, I said. I'm your mama. You you look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We've been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come." Dunham detailed her long journey to motherhood, which included a total hysterectomy at age 31 to treat advanced endometriosis. She has publicly discussed the chronic pain and multiple surgeries she endured before the procedure.
