Lee Chang-dong's 'Possible Love' Wins Historic Silver Lion at Venice

Lee Chang-dong's film "Possible Love" has won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, marking a historic first for a Korean film in that category. The award was announced at the festival's closing ceremony on Saturday, September 13, 2026. The win is a significant milestone for Korean cinema, as "Possible Love" is the first South Korean film to receive the Grand Jury Prize, the festival's second-highest honor after the Golden Lion. It also represents the first prize for a Korean film at Venice since Kim Ki-duk's "Pieta" won the Golden Lion in 2012. For director Lee, the victory comes 24 years after his film "Oasis" earned him the Silver Lion for Best Director at the same festival in 2002. "Possible Love" is Lee's first feature film in eight years, following the critically acclaimed "Burning" in 2018. The drama stars Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong. It follows two married couples from different social classes whose lives become intertwined during the making of a documentary, exploring themes of labor, class division, and human connection.
