Labour Party disowns member over Peter Obi records lawsuit

The Nigerian Labour Party has publicly disowned Abayomi Arabambi, a former member who filed lawsuits seeking the academic records of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, warning that his actions may constitute impersonation. In a statement issued on Monday, September 14, 2026, the party's National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, clarified that Arabambi is no longer a member and could not have instituted the legal actions on the party's behalf. The party's disavowal came after media reports described Arabambi as a Labour Party chieftain in connection with the suits. According to the statement, Arabambi was among 25 members suspended by the party's National Executive Council on March 18, 2026, over alleged antiparty activities. This suspension was subsequently ratified by the party's National Convention on April 28, 2026, after which the affected individuals ceased to be members. Asogwa stated that no party organ has since revisited or reversed that decision. The lawsuits, filed under the Freedom of Information Act, target the West African Examinations Council, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the National Youth Service Corps.
