Labor Day: Retailers Open, Markets Closed

Labor Day, observed annually on the first Monday in September, marks a national tribute to the social and economic achievements of American workers. The tradition traces its roots to the late 19th century, a period of significant labor activism. The first Labor Day celebration took place in New York City on September 5, 1882, featuring a parade of approximately 10,000 workers organized by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor. The holiday's origins are sometimes debated, with some historical records crediting Peter J. McGuire, a leader in the carpentry and joiners union, while others point to machinist Matthew Maguire, who served as secretary for the Central Labor Union at the time. Oregon was the first state to pass a law officially recognizing Labor Day on February 21, 1887.
