LA Woman Charged With Murder in DUI Bus Crash That Killed 2

A Los Angeles woman has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder after her SUV struck a Metro bus, killing two passengers and setting off a chain of events that led to a fatal news helicopter crash hours later. Bailee Lynn Rios, 36, was charged Thursday by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for the September 15 crash that killed bus passengers Daniel Castillo, 46, and Gage Weida, 31. She also faces charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving. The collision occurred at approximately 5 p.m. on September 15 when Rios's 2004 Ford Expedition, traveling at high speed, crossed into opposing traffic on De Soto Avenue in the Chatsworth neighborhood, ran a red light, and struck the side of a Metro Line 166 bus. The impact fully ejected one passenger and partially ejected another. Five other bus passengers were injured, two seriously. District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated that evidence will show Rios was impaired by drugs at the time and that narcotics were found in her vehicle. "The tragedy of the Rios car crash was entirely preventable," Hochman said, adding that if convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
