LA DA Will Not Seek Death Penalty for Nick Reiner in Parents' Murder Case

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced Tuesday that his office will not seek the death penalty for Nick Reiner, who is charged with murdering his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner. The decision, made after a review of aggravating and mitigating factors, means the maximum sentence Reiner faces if convicted is life in prison without the possibility of parole. Hochman stated outside the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center that the views of the victims' family were a key consideration. "We have spoken to the victims' family, we have spoken to prosecutors, law enforcement, and have worked with the most senior people in the district attorney's office," Hochman said. He noted the office took into account the positions of Reiner's siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, as well as his stepsister, Tracy. The victims, Rob and Michele Reiner, were found dead with their throats slashed in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. Nick Reiner was arrested the following day. According to reports, the decision not to pursue capital punishment was influenced by the victims' own opposition to the death penalty, a stance shared by their children.
