LA County Sues State Farm Over Wildfire Claims

Los Angeles County has filed a lawsuit against State Farm, alleging the insurance giant engaged in unfair business practices and mishandled claims following the January 2025 Eaton and Palisades wildfires. The legal action, announced on Monday, August 31, 2026, follows numerous complaints from policyholders who reported significant delays, underpayments, and other issues in receiving benefits they were entitled to. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, details allegations that State Farm systematically delayed claim processing and payments, offered lowball settlements, denied valid benefits, and frequently changed claims adjusters assigned to policyholders. County officials stated that these practices left many homeowners struggling to rebuild and recover from the devastating fires. The complaint also specifically cites issues with the handling of smoke damage claims and additional living expense benefits. According to the county's legal action, State Farm violated California's unfair competition and false advertising laws.
