Kyiv Shootout Injures 3 in Ukraine Intelligence Agency Clash

Published 3 September 2026

A gunfight erupted in Kyiv on Wednesday between personnel from Ukraine's two primary intelligence agencies, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the military intelligence unit (HUR), leaving three people injured. The confrontation, which took place in a residential neighborhood, has prompted President Volodymyr Zelensky to order an investigation and publicly criticize the leaders of both services. The incident began overnight and extended into the morning of September 2. According to a statement from the SBU, its officers were conducting urgent searches related to a pretrial investigation into a terrorist act allegedly organized by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). The SBU claimed that during a search at an address, a group of individuals launched an armed attack on its operational-investigative group, attempting to hinder the investigation by blocking law enforcement with vehicles. The SBU stated it then deployed its Alpha special forces unit to stop the armed resistance, during which weapons were used. The agency said it detained three individuals who belonged to a unit of Ukraine's Defense Forces, seizing weapons and documents from them.
