Kwankwaso Pledges Different Fuel Subsidy Model if Elected

Nigeria Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso says an NDC government would reintroduce fuel support through a different arrangement, aiming to make petrol more affordable if the party wins the 2027 election. The proposal, he said, would not simply restore the previous subsidy system, but its design and financing have not been specified. Kwankwaso outlined the position in an interview broadcast this week, arguing that government could expand refinery capacity and work with public and private refineries to increase domestic supply. He said an NDC administration would seek to lower fuel prices, but gave no cost estimate, funding source or implementation plan for the proposed intervention. Peter Obi’s camp said the proposal is consistent with the presidential candidate’s position. Idris Zekeri, a spokesperson for Obi, said Obi had supported ending the subsidy while also seeking ways to make petrol affordable and address corruption in the system. The NDC, he said, would work with private refineries and reform the oil sector.
