King Charles III gets £99.9m core funding for 2027-2028

King Charles III will receive a core annual funding of £99.9 million for the 2027-2028 financial year, following a significant overhaul of the Sovereign Grant approved by the House of Commons. The increase, which represents a major uplift from previous years, was outlined by Treasury minister Dan Tomlinson, who cited the monarch's "significantly increased" number of engagements, particularly in foreign affairs, as a key factor. The new funding level, set out in the Sovereign Grant Bill, is a substantial rise from the £72.1 million allocated for 2025-2026 and the £51.8 million for 2024-2025. The grant supports the King's official duties and the operations of the Royal Household, covering staffing, official travel, and the maintenance of occupied royal palaces. It is derived from a percentage of the profits of the Crown Estate, a collection of UK lands and property belonging to the reigning monarch, with the remainder going to the Exchequer. The percentage of Crown Estate net profits directed to the grant will rise to approximately 20.5%, up from the previous 12%. This change follows a review by the Royal Trustees and a motion approved by MPs to update the funding formula.
