King Charles hosts AI leaders for safety summit in Scotland

King Charles III is hosting a summit with leaders of major artificial intelligence companies at Dumfries House in Scotland to discuss developing the technology for the good of humanity. The meeting, scheduled for this week, brings together executives from Nvidia, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI, along with the UK's AI minister, Kanishka Narayan. The gathering follows public calls from industry leaders for a slowdown in AI development due to safety concerns. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay on September 12 arguing the industry must deliberately slow the pace at which AI grows more capable. Within a day, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk publicly endorsed Amodei's call. A royal source said the King is there to convene, listen and encourage those discussions and to pose the question of how to develop AI for the good of humanity. The source added that Charles hopes the discussions bring about a wider understanding of the responsibilities of developing this technology, as well as the opportunities, ensuring any technological development remains centred around human benefit for communities.
