Kevin O'Leary Returns to Crypto Market, Eyes Exchange Blockchain Adoption

Published 19 September 2026

Investor Kevin O'Leary announced he is re-entering the cryptocurrency market, stating he is buying new digital asset positions in preparation for the next market cycle. The comments were made during the Avalanche Summit in New York on September 18, 2026. O'Leary, the chairman of O'Leary Ventures, said his renewed investment is focused on identifying which blockchain network could gain widespread institutional adoption. He noted that conversations with chief executives across various industries have not yet revealed a consensus on a single platform, with companies evaluating different blockchains. A key development O'Leary is monitoring is whether a major stock exchange adopts blockchain infrastructure. He described such a move as a potential "watershed moment" for the industry, arguing it would force the broader financial ecosystem to align with the technical and compliance requirements of that exchange. Regarding Bitcoin's potential, O'Leary projected it could eventually account for 1% to 3% of institutional alternative-asset allocations. He drew a direct comparison to the current level of institutional holdings in gold.
