Karnataka Teachers Authorized Tr Prefix
The Karnataka government has officially authorized all teachers in the state to use the prefix "Tr" before their names, a move announced on Teachers Day, September 5, 2026. The decision, formalized through a government order, grants educators a professional title similar to "Dr" for doctors or "Er" for engineers, in recognition of their contributions to society and nation-building. The announcement was made by Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who stated that the prefix is a mark of respect for the invaluable role teachers play in shaping the minds and futures of children. In a post on X, Shivakumar emphasized that teachers are the foundation upon which all other professions are built. "A teacher builds every person who goes on to build the nation," he said, noting that India has over ten million teachers, with nearly 450,000 in Karnataka alone. He described the two-letter prefix as a symbol of a lifetime of service and a recognition that teachers have truly earned. The official Government Order, numbered 216 E SLB 2026, was issued by the Department of School Education and Literacy and signed by S Prakash, Under Secretary Primary.
