Karnataka Recognizes Engineers Day, Grants Er. Prefix

Published 16 September 2026

The Karnataka government has officially recognized September 15 as Engineers Day in the state and granted engineers the right to use the prefix "Er." before their names. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced the decision on Tuesday, September 15, during the 59th Engineers Day celebration organized by the Karnataka Chapter of the Institution of Engineers India. The government order, issued on the same day, formally declares September 15, the birth anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, as Engineers Day. It permits engineers across the state to use the "Er." title, similar to existing professional prefixes like "Dr." for doctors and "Prof." for professors. The order describes engineers as "architects of the future" who develop technical solutions to human challenges, highlighting their role in infrastructure, energy, construction, and information technology. Shivakumar stated that official government celebrations for the occasion will commence in 2027. The format and details of the annual event will be finalized after discussions with senior officials.
