Judge temporarily blocks deportation of Venezuelan man shot by ICE

A federal judge has temporarily blocked the deportation of Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan man who was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Austin on September 20, according to his attorney, Kate LincolnGoldfinch. The judge ordered Garces Perez to appear at a hearing scheduled for September 30, and his attorney said the order prevents his removal while the case moves forward. Garces Perez was shot during an encounter in North Austin while, according to his attorney, he was making a DoorDash delivery. Emergency crews were notified of a reported shooting at about 12:56 p.m. in the 8000 block of Anderson Square and transported an adult man with a gunshot wound to a local trauma center in serious but stable condition, according to Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Rob Luckritz.
