Joint funeral held for couple who died in Spanish hot tub tragedy

Published 19 September 2026

Hundreds of mourners gathered at Our Lady of Knock Church in Ballintra, County Monaghan, on Friday for the joint funeral of Thomasina and Patrick Tobin, a couple who died accidentally in a hot tub while on holiday in Spain last month. The service heard that their deaths have left an "immeasurable void" in the lives of their family and friends. Thomasina Tobin, 51, and her husband Patrick, 48, were found dead in the hot tub of a villa they were renting with their teenage children, Rhea and Séamus, in the Spanish resort of Cullera near Valencia on August 24, 2026. Their deaths were ruled accidental, with Spanish postmortems suggesting possible causes including heart stoppages or electrocution. Canon Patrick McGinn, who officiated at the funeral, described the couple as devoted parents. He told mourners that their children were at the heart of their lives and that they had created a loving home in Greenwich, London, where the family was based. "The sudden passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of all who loved them," he said.
