Jigawa Governor Appoints New Emir of Gumel

Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has approved the appointment of Dr. Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel, following the death of his father, the late Alhaji Dr. Ahmed Muhammad Sani II. The announcement was made on Sunday, September 6, 2026, by the Secretary to the State Government, Bala Ibrahim, during a press briefing in Dutse. The appointment comes three days after the passing of the late Emir, who died on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The late monarch had reigned for approximately 46 years, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in the state. The state government extended its condolences to the royal family and the people of Gumel Emirate, describing the death as a significant loss. Dr. Lawan, who previously served as the Ciroman Gumel, was selected after a competitive succession process involving nine aspirants. The Gumel Emirate kingmakers, led by the Wazirin Gumel, Alhaji Adamu Muhammad Nasoro, conducted the selection and recommended him for the traditional stool. The state government subsequently approved the recommendation in accordance with the Jigawa State Emirate Council Law. Before his elevation, Dr.
