Jharkhand Minister Sonu dies of cardiac arrest Sept 6
Jharkhand minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu, a senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and a close aide to Chief Minister Hemant Soren, died of cardiac arrest on Sunday, September 6, 2026. He was 56. Sonu, who held charge of multiple portfolios including Higher and Technical Education, Urban Development, and Tourism, was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Giridih late Saturday night after complaining of chest pain and died in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to reports, Sonu had returned to his home district of Giridih just two days prior after leading a state delegation to Karnataka. During the night of September 5 into September 6, he experienced discomfort at his residence in Harsingraiyadih and was rushed to the hospital. Despite immediate medical treatment, he could not be saved. The news of his sudden passing triggered widespread grief, with a large number of people, including party workers, senior officials, and members of the public, gathering at the hospital. Sonu was a legislator from Giridih, first elected to the Jharkhand Assembly in 2019 and re-elected in 2024. He also headed the Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sports, and Youth Affairs departments.
