Jeffries threatens response after Democrats help GOP advance vote

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries threatened a "serious response" against two Democratic lawmakers who broke ranks to help Republicans advance a procedural vote, a move that has sparked internal party tensions and raised questions about discipline ahead of the November elections. The defection occurred on September 2, when Representatives Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington voted with the GOP majority to pass a rule that advanced a package of legislation, including a resolution condemning socialism. The procedural vote, known as H. Res. 1499, passed 210-208. Without the support of Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez, the measure would have failed in a tie, as five Republicans also opposed it. The rule authorized floor consideration of several bills, most notably Golden's Northeast Lobstermen Protection Act, which later passed the House 219-196. That legislation would extend until 2035 a moratorium on certain new federal regulations intended to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale, which Golden's office argues could threaten Maine's lobster industry.
