Jaishankar: Oil curbs won't resolve Ukraine war

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated on Thursday that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine cannot be resolved by restricting international purchases of Russian oil, minerals, or other commodities. Speaking during his first visit to Kyiv, Jaishankar emphasized that a lasting resolution requires direct dialogue, diplomacy, and negotiations. During a press conference following talks with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Jaishankar addressed concerns over India's continued trade with Russia, particularly its oil imports. He asserted that the conflict, now in its fifth year, will not be solved by the actions of individual countries buying or not buying specific goods. "This conflict will be solved by dialogue, by diplomacy, by negotiation," he stated, reiterating India's long-standing position. Jaishankar also highlighted the challenges India faces in ensuring energy security for its population of 1.4 billion people, especially amid a difficult global energy situation.
