Iyer backs India's depth ahead of Afghanistan T20I series

India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer stated that while injuries can disrupt team combinations, he has full confidence in the squad's depth ahead of the three-match series against Afghanistan. The first T20I is scheduled for Sunday, September 13, in New Delhi. Iyer addressed the media on Saturday, September 12, acknowledging the impact of frequent injuries on team planning. "It certainly impacts the combination, but we know how all the players are. Even if there is a backup, he is equally important for the team and we know that they can deliver as well," Iyer said. He emphasized that players should not be blamed for injuries sustained while competing at high intensity. A significant boost for India is the return of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah from a long injury layoff. Iyer confirmed he had spoken with Bumrah, noting the bowler's eagerness to contribute. "He is in that mindset where he wants to come and perform for the team and see to it that we win championships," Iyer said. The captain also provided an update on wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who left a training session on Friday with a back issue.
