Israeli Forces Kill Palestinian After Checkpoint Attack

Israeli forces shot and killed Palestinian man Mahmoud Mohammad Mahmoud Suleiman after Israeli authorities said his vehicle struck a police patrol at a checkpoint west of Ramallah on Wednesday, seriously wounding reservist Neria Leiter. The Palestinian Health Ministry identified Suleiman as 29 and said he was shot near Beit Ur al-Tahta in the occupied West Bank. Israeli police and military accounts said a vehicle drove toward a patrol during a joint operation at a checkpoint on Route 443, and that forces shot the driver. Police said a member of the patrol was seriously injured. The reports do not include independent witness accounts or other evidence establishing the circumstances or intent behind the vehicle’s movements. Leiter, the son of Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. Israeli emergency services reported that he was in serious condition. The hospital said he underwent emergency brain surgery and additional procedures; his condition later stabilized but remained serious and life-threatening.
