Israel Closes UK Consulate Over Settlement Sanctions

Twelve countries, including the United Kingdom, France, and Canada, announced Tuesday they would impose sanctions on trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank, prompting Israel to retaliate by closing the British consulate in Jerusalem and banning entry for 12 British nationals. The coordinated action, also supported by Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden, targets goods originating from settlements deemed illegal under international law and penalizes entities supporting their expansion. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stated that the United Kingdom's official stance is that the occupation of the West Bank is unlawful and that this should be reflected in economic relationships. He accused Israeli settlers of perpetrating "ethnic cleansing" and stated that the Israeli government often overlooks or supports the forced displacement of Palestinians. Miliband also indicated that war crimes may have been committed in Gaza since the October 7, 2023, attacks.
